I've found it has the nice side benefit of me getting more familiar with the special abilities of the different races and classes, which then allows me to help my players better. This makes creating and upgrading your character much easier, and allows your DM to have a live view of your sheet if you're playing online as so many people do. I've based the layout and fields on the default character sheet for familiarity and ease of use. So I made my own. Google Docs is great for playing online because you can just toss your DM the link to your character sheet. Mine isn't pretty, but it's perfectly functional and has plenty of space to work with.
